“Avoid Tax Preparation Sticker-Shock!”

Dear Taxpayer:

Here’s how it usually works: You call several of the big name tax preparation offices and ask for an estimated cost of preparing your tax return. Nine times out of ten you’ll be told it depends on the complexity of your return...the more forms involved, the more it will cost...and they won’t know for certain until the return is finished.

Fifty years ago this was a valid response. Even as little as ten years ago it might have made sense. But not today! The fact is, all the calculations and form determinations that tax preparation specialists used to have to make are now made by the software programs they use. (If they put the right info into the program...one of the things you need to look for in a tax prep person is their skill at interviewing you to maximize your refund.)

For example: If you qualify for an Earned Income Credit the software makes that determination automatically and generates the appropriate form. It costs not one penny more to generate the EIC form, yet most tax preparers will still charge you an additional $25 or more if that form is part of your return.

OK...with a laser printer they use a smidgen of toner and a sheet of paper...so maybe it actually costs 3 pennies more to print the additional form. Does that justify a $25 upcharge?

I think not...that’s why I don’t charge you for forms the system automatically generates.
